Hello all, I was wondering if there was any correlation between health (physical vitality, immunity or susceptibility to illness, etc.) and the natal 1st house...? I know health matters tend to be assigned to the natal 6th house (and its ruler), but can natal planets and transits in/to the 1st house also indicate health concerns/issues, especially when the sixth house is unoccupied/unaspected?!? Looking forward to any and all responses!!! Thank you so much!

As 1st house concerns among others physical appearance, i think health also is one of those things, so health is also one of the things represented by the 1st house

Hi Lunariviera,
I think the Ascendant has correspondence with the physical body, and maybe also the 1st house. I recall when I had a Jupiter transit across my Asc into the 1st house the reading was to watch out for overeating! It is the house of Aries, right?, ruled by Mars - which is about physical vitality. I suspect it's not that fastidious Virgo-6th-house concern with health so much as the simple Aries-Mars-body that's more a 1st house matter.
Hope that helps!

And if we remember how the houses of the zodiac "work," we bring what is in the first house, into the second, and so on.

Good Question!
The first house is v. SELF, v. Aries. If you don't 'do' your first house via the signs there, and any planets, and the rulers, you don't know yourSELF. You don't know who you are! You can’t be authentic!
In traditional astrology, it is the FIRST HOUSE that rules the general state of health, healers, doctors, treatments etc belong to the 6th. Serious states of ill-health belong to the 12th, along with hospitalization.
This is no surprise when we see the link between being authentically 'who we are' and being healthy. Dis-ease is energy degraded and we can become unwell when we deny and repress essential aspects of ourself.
Everyone, look at your 1st house and give it a score of 1-10 based on how much you honor the energy there in your life right now. Then score your state of health. Do they match?
This is the connection I am talking about. (simplified, of course, but an interesting experiement)

Thank you all so much for your thoughtful and illuminating responses!!!
waterman- it's true about the ascendant and appearance (check out astrofaces.com)...people tend to "wear" their illness in the same way in which they can exemplify their wellness...
3HN- I can totally relate to the Jupiter/overeating thing as I have Jupiter conjunct Mercury in my 1st natally...weight and overindulgence is always something I have to watch out for in general (plus my primary astrological make-up are three signs that tend to overdo it in relation to food and comfort as it is...Cancer Sun, Taurus Moon, Leo Rising)
Amoroso- I really like the idea of the houses blending and bleeding into one other...no planets or houses exist in a vaccum...it's definitely a journey and everything works in tandem!
Kim- thanks for clearing up the rulership issues...it all makes perfect sense!...could you elaborate more on the nature of the 12th house and serious illness (I definitely get the hospitalization aspect of it)...are their certain planets in the 12th that predispose someone to serious illnesses?!...I have the Sun and Venus in the 12th (in Cancer)...would the Sun in particular (our life force) be compromised by such a placement?!...sorry for jumping off topic for the moment, but I'm really interested in any and all insight into determining overall health from a chart...
Thank you!!!

I'm sitting here with lower back pain for no good reason, along with Leo rising, in full agreement. If we do our 1st house it won't have to do us. The ascendant is said to be the mask we are given for the Sun to shine through. This is obvious with Leo rising. So how to use Leo with Pluto close by to allow a 2nd house Virgo Sun to shine fully? And how have I not been doing that?
Well I'm without income. My husband's co-workers druel over the lunches he brings in so I've told him I will provide my service (can't legally sell food without a licienced kitchen) to make a few bucks. I haven't even fed that many of them but I've noticed my arms and lower back have increased symptoms. Hmmm.

libra rising here with mars-uranus in libra in the 1st.
if i don't move my body/work out regularly, i seem to draw conflict to me, and have accidents. it used to happen a lot, and recently not much. but saturday my girlfriend and i were almost hit by a car while crossing the street, something that happens almost weekly when i don't work out a lot.
also used to draw conflict in the form of angry others. i've been threatened up close and personal a few times - sometimes it seems that, if during these times when i'm holding a lot of energy in me, people with things to prove let me know they'd love to prove them with me - fighting-wise, 100% ridiculous if you knew me and the libra vibe i'm giving off. but it confuses people: all this libra stuff, venus in libra on the ASC, and then mars-uranus in the 1st. they're also square the nodes, so i have some stuff about them to look at.

With 29 Libra rising, all my first house is in Scorpio. Mars is Scorpio's "agent," but Pluto rules the house. My Sun and Mercury are in the eighth house, ruled by Pluto, and Ceres in the only planet in my sixth, in Aries! (again, ruled by Mars.) Saturn is exact on the second house cusp. That is a huge amount of "heavy"energy. No wonder I was 60 pounds overweight 2 years ago.
It has taken me my whole life to learn how to use this energy positively. I am the one who has had 8 abdominal surgeries every two years for the past 19 years as well as some huge power struggles through my marriage and work. (Pluto in 10th) The last surgery was in Feb. 2004, with severe complications. The wound did not close until March, 2005. But I am in the best shape I've been for 20 years and am working hard to keep improving.
Lunariviera, you asked about planets in the 12th as an indicator of hospitals, etc. I have Neptune and Vesta in the 12th, within 1-2 degrees of my AC. When I was first learning about astrology, I kept looking at those planets as an indicator of why I had all those hospital stays. But I think the answer is closer to the first house and what we "bring into" the rest of the chart.
Kris suggested I look at transits to my 8th house to find out what was going on when I had my surgeries. Well, three-quarters of the time, Mars was transiting my 8th! and the worst surgery he was on my 8th house vertex!
In my work, I use alot of Plutonic/Mars energy, but when I looked WITHIN to discern my underlying motivations, energies, etc., and was really honest with those energies, I started to heal. Ceres in the 6th has been huge. I discovered recently that I can not eat grains of any kind, not even gluten-free grains. No cereal, no rice, no breads, NADA. My mother is a recovered celiac sprue, so I thought I could handle the gluten-free stuff. But now that I am off it entirely, I feel much better and have more energy.
Anyway, good thread!
Blessings, Amoroso

So, Amoroso, would you say that Ceres, ruling grains especially, and being in a natural grain house is showing through the house of daily needs placement, that you already have enough of the grain element already in place and shouldn't add anymore on a daily basis?
I guess what I'm asking is: Does a planet in a house or sign indicate that the energy is present there and the balance can be upset by adding more?
For example: I have Mercury in Virgo in the 2nd, ruling there. It seems the more I think about money or lack of, the less that flows. It seems that when I assess my means and live accordingly, not having to "watch" it, the resources are more abundant. This is especially true now that I'm not married to someone that has the attitude the resources are his and hes sharing with his family.
I have Ceres in Libra in the 3rd, representing my 1st brother. He obsesses over diet, eating an abundance of grains, fruits and vegetables since he was 18. But he has always had digestive problems. Ceres may be telling him go lighter on the natural harvest foods. He has started incorporating meat protein and is doing better.

Gosh, Aqua, that is a most interesting idea that you've presented, the whole Ceres-in-th-sixth-grains-thing!
For your Mercury in Virgo, I think what you have described is not "over using" the energy, but that it may be a more "unskillful" application of the energy. Worry seems to be an unskilled use of Virgoian energy, and when you put your mind (Mercury) there, you will draw to you what is on your mind.
I have alot of Virgo Dwads and Decans and Mercury in Gemini, so I totally understand!
Let me know how that "fits."
Blessings, Amoroso

Don't you feel 'weak' at all without grains, Amo?? My daughter as a baby could not digest grains, and still has continually irritated skin. We could try a non-grain diet for her, I guess. I tried a non-grain diet two months ago, and that felt great, but when the heatwave struck, I could not continue, so shaky did I start to feel. Ceres on the DC. Ruler of my 6th is Mercury in 8, (also ruler of 5 and 8) and when I worry or just plain 'think', write or analyze too much, I get ill. My solution is to DO (Mars is conjunct Merc) very practical/earthy things, like diy, paint, embroider, cook= use my mind in an earthy way, use my hands. Times of grave illness always saw transiting Mars aspects to Saturn in 11. Aha, Saturn is ruler of my AC and I was having grave back problems ten years ago! I almost died of a liquor leak when Mars was on Pluto at cusp 8!!!!! There has been a shift, because my physical energy is strong these days, even when Mars hit natal Pluto the end of July.
My physical and emotional energies are usually lowest when Sun is in Pisces and opposes everything in 8.
Amoroso, how was this years transit of Mars through your 8th?? Love, Juliet

I am so glad I came to this site today! The above posts gave me pause. Thank you everyone for sharing.
Where in the chart would I be able to find problems-- recurring problems-- with reproductive organs? Would it just be with hard transits from Pluto (as Scorpio rules reproductive organs)? Hard transits to Ceres (nurturing)? Is there an asteroid that would be good to look at?
I ask, because I have cysts that keep reappearing on my left ovary. It's more bothersome than anything else. My life is not at risk in any way. Doctor's will tell me, stress plays a big part in bringing on the cysts. Fair enough. But could I pinpoint something in my chart, that might make me more prone to this condition? That could give me a heads up to be more mindful of what my body is telling me?
I have Saturn conjunct my ascendant in Taurus. Natally it conjuncts my Sun and Mars in Leo. Not the easiest first house, but I don't think it's responsible for the cysts. Pluto is in my natal 5th house, and it rules my 7th. My moon is in my 12th.
I had this condition 2 years ago, and approx 2 years before that. My natal Sun was transiting over Pluto 2 years ago, and now transiting Pluto is in hard aspect to natal Pluto.
I guess my hope is, if I can look out for progressions and transits in my chart, I can be more proactive in my daily life-- and be on the lookout for symptoms before anything bad happens.
Any insights would be lovely. Thanks
