Hi Kim,
Can you give me an interpretation of saturn conjunct lilith in virgo? From my reading up on lilith, it seems like she's the "bad girl" side of venus. The aspect is also in my upcoming 2005 solar return as well, except it's in cancer.
I really can't get a hold of this asteroid thing!
Thanks, lana3959

Dear Iana,
Getting a handle on the Asteroids takes time. It is like getting to know characters in a book. They are all out there on an adventure and it is up to us to learn what they need, want and have to offer. When we know this, we can honor them, which is a metaphor for honoring that part of ourselves.
There are THREE astronomical points called Lilith. One is the BLACK MOON LILITH, the vortex or empty lunar focal point along the moon's apogee. Another is the DARK MOON LILITH, or the hypothetical second moon in orbit around the earth and one is the asteroid, 1181 LILITH. Each of these astrological points and bodies carry the archetype of Lilith.
For an in depth discussion by Kelley Hunter on the three distinct astrological Liliths, see The Mountain Astrologer magazine . (go to my links page and then search the archives)
ASTEROID 1181 LILITH
Asteroid Lilith orbits between Mars and Jupiter in the main asteroid belt, taking about nine years to complete a cycle. Mythically, Lilith is the "She Demon" of ancient Babylon. She is written of in Isaiah 34:14 as a "screech owl," and is a form of apocalyptic harbinger. Her name means "Night," "Lamb Strangler," "Bone Crusher".
"...her earliest origins in ancient Sumeria (depicts) the handmaiden of the great goddess Innana. It was Lilith who brought the people in from the fields to Innana's holy temple at Erech for the scared sexual rites. She represented an aspect of feminine sexuality that is free, unfettered, instinctive, animating, ecstatic, healing and sacred." Demetra George
Lilith is an entity known by the Babylonians, Sumerians, Hebrews, and early Christians as a daemon of raw, instinctual wisdom, power and sexual autonomy. Her stories are diverse and sometimes terrifying. In all cases, she is unique in her refusal to relinquish her power. As the first wife of Adam, she left the garden and was outcast as a demoness when she wanted to switch positions or make love side by side. Adam had to be on top.
Lilith bows down to no man yet is willing to share her tantric arts with him. In many cases, man violently rejects her, projecting onto her his repressed and demonic fears of dark feminine power. This turns her into an outcast, explosive with rage and bent on retaliation.
Lilith's symbol is like a hand and can be considered a beckon, a salutation, or perhaps a dire warning, depending on how she is approached. What intention do we have in mind when we meet with this dark goddess?
We all have her plutonic quality in us, the unconscious energy that brings up harsh boundaries between life and death, ecstasy and suffering, passion and revulsion, enslavement and freedom. How do we honor Lilith in our lives? Do we exile her from consciousness or build her a sanctuary for potent, creative expression? When she contacts Saturn, she may be all that much more frightening to the “brighter” side of the personality yet by integrating her power and wisdom into our lives, we become more whole, more complete.
Anything connected to Saturn touches our shadow and issues of the sacred feminine, sexuality and instinctual wisdom may be very sensitive territory for you. There could be a fascination and repulsion all at once. You may find that extreme characteristics of Lilith are qualities you “can’t stand” in other women. Yet there is something to learn from her here.
Asteroid 1181 Lilith brings up deep and primal sexual energy sometimes accompanied by feelings of anger, rejection and rage. Her theme is power-alluring and irresistible. Saturn wants to block it, contain it, make it safe. Lilith sees this as incarceration, death. The question is, in what ways can you find to express the Lilith in you that does not threaten the edifice and construct of your identity (Saturn)? Can you draw her, dance her, write her stories? Have there ever been any relationships in which you have “let her loose”? What happened?
Lilith in Virgo is looking for sacred sex and the expression of ancient wisdom, the respect for the feminine. Saturn is what we fear to be, yet what we excel at once we become. How do you think these two forces have fared in your life so far?
Does anyone else have Lilith and Saturn in close aspect in the natal chart? Comments?
Thank you for bringing up the topic of Lilith. I think she is very important to consider, especially now with the discovery of Sedna.
Let me know how this fits.
Warmly, Kim

Hi Kim,
Thanks for all that info. on lilith. She's really interesting. Kind of like a female pluto. I think I embody a lot of her positive and negative qualities and let her run free quite a bit. It seems like it usually results in guilt and unhappiness, though, because of low self-esteem and opposition from others. Maybe that's the saturn/virgo part of it. Also, she could probably expand on my heavy uranian emphasis clashing with the strong virgo qualities in my natal chart. It seems like it all just creates a big theme in my life: "I'm gonna' do what I want and make myself happy, and don't try to stop me ." vs. "I shouldn't have done that. I'm a horrible, selfish person." I need to grow the self-esteem and calm down the rebelliousness at the same time.
You brought up that I may dislike the qualities of lilith in other women. I think you're right to a certain extent. I have to say honestly that it is difficult for me to get close to other women, because I perceive (and expect at some point) jealousy and maliciouness. It makes me angry that a lot of women will dump and hate other women just because of men. It seems like in the end the only thing women want is a man. On the other hand, I like the part of certain women that is strong-willed, opinionated, and in control.
I'm still a little confused about lilith, because I've never studied her affects on myself, but I guess I'll find out next year what she's like!
Thanks Kim for help on this subject.

You are welcome! It takes time (a lifetime) to understand the diverse and subtle nature that is the Self!
Lilith is very powerful, and so is Saturn. Your “Do what I want vs I shouldn’t have done that…” is an example of this Lilith/Saturn struggle. I think eventually other women, and the potent female qualities in yourself, (Lilith) will be your greatest allies and strength (Saturn). Finding ways for these two archetypes to “get along” will help with your successes in your own life.
Thanks again for the question.
Warmly, Kim
