Hello Geri,
Are you saying that HE has Sun square Saturn in HIS natal chart or that you have this aspect in your composite?
First up, you may want to read the current thread on Saturn in the 7th house. There too, readers were concerned about the bad press Saturn gets in most delineations. Does everyone forget that Saturn ruled over the Golden Age of humankind?
I’m not saying that Sun/Saturn, in any chart, is carefree. We just have to be careful about blanket statements suggesting that it is not only a problematic contact but a stagnant one as well. When authors suggest that it will ALWAYS be a certain way, or that things will NEVER change, they have missed the point entirely as well as failed to take consciousness into account.
I want everyone reading this forum to take a moment and think of what Saturn NEEDS, WANTS and has to OFFER. Once done, there is no longer the question of this planet being TRULY UNFORTUNATE. Again, who writes this kind of stuff?
So, what does Saturn square the Sun NEED? Here are a few suggestions. You can come up with your own: Creative goals! A strong and distinct identity. A well defined edifice for the ego with boundaries that demarcate clearly where one ends and another begins. What does he WANT? Respect! Success! Challenge! Growth! What does he have to offer? The opportunity in life to face intense fears and doubts and feelings of unworthiness in order to become ones own authority, a distinct, creative and self-sufficient individual striving to become everything they can possibly be.
I hope this begins to address the limitations of descriptions such as WET BLANKET.
Yes, Saturn square the Sun often begins its process with trouble with father, disappointments, repression, and lack of self-esteem. If it were all meadows and daisies, we’d hardly trouble with the work. And, Saturn is truly about the work, the great opus. He turns, over our lifetime, the lead into the gold, the neonate into the mature individual. Saturn/Sun brings focus to this process. It makes it happen because it is too painful to ignore.
I love Joanne Wickenburg’s take on this (See her site via my links. She is a marvellous teacher). She said to imagine, before you are born, that you are contemplating your next life and you ask, “What do I really want to get right this time around?” And that is where you will place your Saturn by sign, house and aspects. It will be an area of life most challenging, and also most rewarding when you meet the challenge. It will be an area of life you can not ignore.
So no, I don’t see Saturn/Sun contacts as always UNFORTUNATE. I don’t see them as wet blankets and I don’t see them as stagnant barriers to fun and fulfilment. I see them as gateways to becoming more of who we are, natally or by composite. Saturn is only limiting when his needs, wants and offerings are neglected.
I highly recommend Liz Greene’s book, Saturn: A New Look at and Old Devil. Her insights into this planet are well worth reading.
How do you feel a Saturn/Sun contact plays out in Synastry or composite? What are your feelings about this being a “Karmic” contact or one that signifies “past life” connections? Yes? No? Anyone?
Blessings,
Kim
