Ixion

In Greek mythology, Ixion was one of the Lapiths, a king of Thessaly, and a son of Antion or Phlegyas. Pirithous was his son (or stepson, with Zeus being his father). Ixion married Dia, a daughter of Deioneus (or Eioneus) and promised his father-in-law a valuable present. However, he did not pay the bride price, so Deioneus stole some of Ixion's horses in retaliation. Ixion concealed his resentment and invited his father-in-law to a feast at Larissa. When Deioneus arrived, Ixion pushed him into a bed of burning coals and wood. The neighboring princes were so offended by this act of treachery (and violation of Xenia) that they refused to perform the rituals that would cleanse Ixion of his guilt. Thereafter, Ixion lived as an outlaw and shunned. By killing his father-in-law, Ixion was reckoned the first man guilty of kin-slaying in Greek mythology. That alone would warrant him a terrible punishment. However, Zeus had pity on Ixion and brought him to Olympus and introduced him at the table of the gods. Instead of being grateful, Ixion grew lustful for Hera, Zeus's wife. Zeus found out about his intentions (either because Hera told him or because of his own efforts)and investigated the matter. Zeus made a cloud in the shape of Hera, which became known as Nephele, and tricked Ixion into coupling with it. From the union of Ixion and the cloud came the race of Centaurs (hence their being called Ixionidae). However, another myth asserts that the founder of the Centaur race was not Ixion, but a zoophiliac outcast named Centaurus, a son of Apollo and brother of Lapithus. Ixion was expelled from Olympus and blasted with a thunderbolt. Zeus ordered Hermes to bind Ixion to a wheel that was always spinning. Therefore, Ixion is bound to a burning wheel for all eternity in Tartarus. The story of Ixion is told by Diodorus, Pindar, Virgil in Georgics 4 and Aeneid 6, and by Ovid in Metamorphoses 12. Source--wikipedia Fascinating tale but oh baby where's the redemption??? Not here darlin'. Ixion seems to represent the self run amok wantonesses, action with little thought or morality. My take on this? There is his first failure to deliver (the gift); in doing so betrayal of the family and expected code of behavior; failure to accept responsibility for the betrayal and then anger/temper/retaliation (murder). Finally equally important there is failure to be grateful for the second chance, to seize the opportunity given, the elevation in possible status--instead stubbornly following his lust/lasciviousness only to be banished once again and this time in a way where he is tightly bound (not free), incapable of moving or roaming. So I would say ... Wanton Self-focus, Pigheadnesses, Blindness to second opportunity/and most blatantly refusal to be redeemed/suffering of one's own making. ... Of course there is also the big family betrayal theme, blood spilt.

I would also have to add "biting the hand that feeds you. I just looked up mine and it is conjunct my 4th son's Sun. Son Sun, sounds like a song, LOL The story makes me really sad though. I always did my best to teach my children how to take care of themselves and be good stewards with our resouces I think I mentioned elsewhere that he hasn't spoken to me since the fall of 2003 because I told him at 19, making the same amount as me, it was time to start paying his way, $50 per week for room and board. He moved in with his dad within the week. What's puzzling is that this degree is contra-antiscion my Sun, same distance from Aries-Libra. My Sun has as much light as his has night and visa versa. The half way point is equality. I guess he didn't want to be treated like an adult. Or perhaps I'm missing something. Transiting Ixion was conjunct my Eros and his Uranus that month, opposing his Chiron, antiscion my Chiron in the 6th. He still has an 81 Malibu here he refuses to move. It's in my chicken coop since I don't have a garage and can't have non running cars outside in my township. It doesn't fit so the hind end is sticking out, yuck. And we cant get out lawn equipment in there. He refuses to move it to his dad's. So I'm the one stuck. If I file for lost title since its abandoned and scrap it out, he'll never speak to me and the whole family will be criticizing me. So I have a daily reminder of my loss.

I finally read this thread--there are so many threads these days I know we can't possibly read all of them, let alone absorb info and contribute to all of them.
BO--very fine analysis, as I was reading your take on Ixion I thought "action without gratitude," and voila, you said the same thing.
Aqua, I feel that this is tied in to your current horary, to which I hope to respond.
There is an article in the paper today about a book a psychologist has written regarding kids today and how growing up privileged has created a generation of high achievers with no ability to connect to another. It caught my eye as a parent, because, like you, we do our best to raise healthy, happy kids, but often what we are trying to do goes against the rest of the culture. (no, you may not have a cell phone and an Ipod at age 13, so your friends don't have chores and get paid for their grades? That's nice, but not here, etc....)
Our daughter is going to El Salvador next week with a work-study group and she is about to experience life in a whole new way.
It sounds like your son's father wants to be liked, and it is very hard to do the right thing and be liked sometimes. And it is a whole lot easier--that is an understatement, to follow through with teaching a child to be independent and contribute to society when everything in our path conspires to do just the opposite.
You are trying to do the right thing, and without support from anyone else.
I am not sure what this asteroid means in my chart, but I am going to ponder it. Whatever it is, like everything else it must take time to find a constructive use for it's energies. Awhile back I started to keep a "gratitude journal." My Ixion is at 19 Libra in my 12th, trine my Sun.
More soon, Amoroso

I REALLY did not write this well. What I meant to say is that it is a whole lot easier to act as a friend to a child than follow through with teaching, etc.
Sorry 'bout that!

What a coincidence Amoroso, your Ixion is conjunct mine and that son's Sun also contr-antiscion my Sun. And it's very close to my Mo/Su.
