According to Astrology Weekly:
"Definition of Intercepted House
One in which a Sign is contained wholly within the House, which sign does not appear upon either cusp of the House. It is more logical to consider the House as intercepted by the Sign - than the reverse although it is frequently referred to as an intercepted sign, instead of an intercepting sign. An intercepted House is generally either preceded or followed by one that has the same sign on both the cusps. The affairs of an intercepted House are generally complicated, and the planets therein are of more than average importance.
In this case I do not have the interceptions I thought I had in my chart as this definition states "a sign wholly contained within the house"
I didn't know that....In my chart I have a sign intercepted in each house but not "wholly contained"

Hi Flower,
Even though you may not have an interception by birth its good to understand what they can mean since your returns and progressions can. I have put together my understanding of them by synthesizing informatin from more than one source.
Jrsaman if you want to share the rest of your interception I'll use that as an example of how I interpret them. Because of the interception there are two axis that are ruled by the same pair of signs. Which signs and houses are involved there?

So you have Pisces on 2 and Virgo on 8 (me just opposite)
May be you have troubles with being assertive and impulsive and sure of your possessions, your earning money instinct, how you value yourself (Aries intercepted in 2), while you have Pisces on 2... you are vague on this matters, don't know how to set your boundaries in those matters...
Libra intercepted in 8... may be you have troubles with being 'loveable' in an intimate relationship (Libra intercepted in 8), and you have tendencies towards nagging once a relationship is really established (Virgo on 8)...
I find intercepted signs really interesting I have Scorpio/ Taurus intercepted in 3/9... it's the most important ax in my chart i guess 3rd house contains Pluto, Saturn & Soutn Node in Scorpio (intercepted) 9th house contains BML, Venus and North Node in Taurus (intercepted) I have Libra on the 3rd house cusp, but still the Scorpio attitude towards communication (3rd house theme) types me more then the Libra attitude...
Got to go... work... Catch y'all later...

Thanks for bringing this up flower because it is a subject often minimized to our detriment. I have seen them play out temporarily in my returns and progressions that give helpful insight into the dynamic conflicts each year. So it benifits us all to learn how to read them. Here's part of an article I'm working on for my reconstructed site, still in progress. ...Interceptions are an oddity that go unnoticed if using an equal house system. It is my belief that all houses aren’t equal. Perhaps they were originally created and intended to be equal but through our learning and growing process inequalities occur temporarily. I use Placidus house system most of the time. But others work just as well, some resonating better than others. The unequal house systems show me where more and less room and emphasis is given. Interceptions occur for longer periods of time at greater latitude. I notice that at the equator a sign will be intercepted for 1 minute or 8 minutes (I never saw another another amount of time interval), then there will be a couple hour period with no interception in between. As we near 45 degrees north, there are periods of about an hour and a half with 3 signs taking their turn being intercepted then maybe 30 minutes to an hour with no sign intercepted. The earth bulges at the equator. The equatorial bulge occurs because of the rate of speed the earth is spinning on it’s axis or it‘s daily orbital motion. Apparantly, in the beginning the bulge was much greater and as we are gradually spinning slower the bulge is decreasing. The earth is attempting to become more round. Gravity is slightly less at the equator than at the poles. A clock using a pendulum runs about 2 ½ minutes slower at the equator than when placed 45 degrees north. This was one of the first examples used to prove the earth bulged. If there were no bulge at the equator, the waters would flood everything. The current accepted ratio of this bulge is 1:297. If you were to divide the earth into 12 segments you’d see the segments covering the Tropic of Cancer to the Tropic of Capricorn include more space than the other segments. I see the cardinal signs intercepted the most, mutable 2nd most and the fixed signs intercepted the least in the charts I’ve worked with. The fixed signs are also intercepted for the least amount of time, often only 1 or two minutes. My understanding of interceptions came from a synthesis of two different astrologer’s ideas. The first is Barbara Hand Clow in her book of Chiron. The second is Mary Devlin in her book Astrology & Past Lives. Referring to Chiron intercepted along the Virgo/Pisces axis on pages 191-192 Ms. Clow states, “…Many find retrograde planets and interceptions hard to understand, but great progress is made as soon as it is clear that retrogrades are a time dynamic altering perception, an interceptions are a place dynamic altering perception. With an interception, the houses intercepted indicate a past and present life karmic dynamic; I.e., they show a past-life-karmic failure which will be dealt with in this lifetime no matter what. Interceptions are very Chirotic because they are always a sign that the soul has set up the dynamic to force the issue in this lifetime. It is as if Uranus is going to electrify and push consciousness until Saturn takes control of the past-life failure and disciplines the soul into manifesting the issue. Be prepared for a strong statement: I have never yet had a cliet with an interception who wasn’t mastering their karmic failure and giving the gift indicated by the interception. I have puzzled over this for years and I didn’t understand what might be happening until I really experienced the teaching which says that we have the same rising sign degree with each incarnation in a cycle; that the Sabian symbol is a reading of the soul throughout all lifetimes. So when there is an interception the client has created an alteration in the dynamic in order to accomplish something very karmic.” “…The intercepted house polarity is the part of consciousness that the native feels like a complete failure about, when it is in fact the part of themselves that is developing the most.” The second half of my understanding came from Mary Devlin who covers all the karmic configurations shown in the chart explaining the balancing of each axis around the chart. In summary, the 6 themes are: Aries/Libra: Liberty vs. Law Taurus/Scorpio: Generation vs. Regeneration Geminii/Sagittarius: Reason vs. Revelation Cancer/Capricorn: Home vs. State Leo/Aquarius: Centralization vs. Distribution Virgo/Pisces: Analysis vs. Synthesis The synthesis of these two women’s work led me to the following conclusion that has been proven true over and over: The intercepted signs show a karmic imbalance that has occurred, now to be finally resolved and brought into balance. The interception acts as a magnet to draw into the life opportunities and events which will guarantee success during this lifetime. Because of this imbalance another axis has gained authority and dominance in two different areas of life. This is shown by the signs ruling 2 houses instead of their allotted one. The first pair shows the deficiency the intercepted imbalance resulted in. The second pair shows where the deficiency is projected. If there is also a karmic configuration of planets found in the chart, more information can be found as to the specifics of how this imbalance occurred and can be balanced. The most important thing for a person with an interception to know is that there is no need for feeling like a failure or feeling guilty, which is often the case. When looked at objectively, it will be clear that the axis is well on its way toward balance, especially by mid life. Another interesting article on the interception can be found at: www.rosicrucian.com/sia/siaeng38.htm

I get confused when it comes to interceptions because I sometimes switch between Placidus and Koch house systems and I get two different possible sign/house combos intercepted...
Using Placidus (my preferred house system), Gemini-Sag is intercepted (11th-5th houses)...this means that my Mars in Gemini (11H) opposition to Neptune in Sag. (5H) is part of the interception...
Using Koch, Taurus-Sco. is intercepted (10th-4th houses)...which includes a wide orb oppostion between my Moon in Taurus (10H) and my Uranus in Sco. (4H)...not to mention my natal Chiron, which is in a tighter oppostion to Uranus...
Upon reflection, they both seem to relate back to my 10th house since my MC is in Aries and that adds some further emphasis to that Mars-Neptune opposition...
I intuivitely sense that these interceptions are significant in my chart, unfortunately I can't get a handle on exactly what they're trying to convey...?!

I'm swamped right now but will post some of my article on interceptions soon--a great resource is Joanne Wickenburg’s book, "Intercepted Signs & Retrograde Planets". Well worth including in your library. www.joannewickenburg.com/books_by_joanne_wickenburg.htmThanks aquarianessence for your contributions here. Warmly, Kim

Your welcome, Kim. I look forward to the article.
Lunar. The Gem-Sag along this axis feels like a struggle between what seems possible according to the available information and making room for something as yet unknown, the possiblility of something bigger than what can be known logically. Neptune in the axis of love brings in idealism but also the danger of being disillusioned.
Taurus-Scorpio is a struggle to maintain balance with resources and values within the family structure and the world at large, or the value of taking care of the family vs working out in the world. Do you feel you balance both sides of either of these better than the other? Do you see where either has been a struggle but have made great progress?

Hi Jr,
Waterman has a good point. I know this pattern very well, with different planet placements, of course. The interception indicates an imbalance with Liberty vs. Law concerning values. What is me and mine vs what is you, yours and ours. The node placement with most of the planets on the side of other shows that is where the energy has focused in the past. Perhaps you tend to doubt your own abilities in the area of not only bringing in resources but in sexual areas also. You may constantly compare yourself to others, who makes more money, has more skill, more value... You may be bothered when certain people get praise and notice. You may wonder why you aren't getting the same. The key here is to compare only to yourself, are you the best you can be. As I said in another thread, the issue may involve the problem of putting a value on things that don't traditionally have value attached and recognizing its importance along side of those things that have a set value attached. I always bring household-family tasks in here because it is the most common commodity that society doesn't pay for. Meal preparation and laundry duty is just as valuable as what the Doctor or President does but society doesn't place a value on it. In the same way the little things are just as necessary and valuable as the big things. Take the female genitalia as an example, it is much smaller and less noticeable than the male counterpart but just as sensitive and important in lovemaking. This is where Gem-Sag comes in.
The double ruled houses show how this imbalance has affected other areas of life. Feelings of inferiority may cause a shutdown in communications so the necessary information is lacking. In the area of intimacy, the differences between the two demand being informed of what the other likes, or getting real good at reading the other. Another thing that can happen here is the need to be sure the other is pleased being put before ones own pleasure so the intimacy and depth of simultaneous oneness is lacking. Me first or you first leaves out the possibility of reaching the heights together, an experience that multiplies intimacy a thousandfold. It takes a certain amount of communication and learning but it can be done.
It could also be that one has depended on others for resources which caused a deficiency in formal training which is then projected onto the career or home life and/or blamed onto the parents, but adding to the feelings of inadequacy to perform or be equally valuable on the job, whether at home or out in the world. One I know with this interception pattern quit school after 6 months. He had it easy in primary school, didn't even need to study to be on the honor roll. But the need to work, both to earn the money for school, and to make it in a Technical Institute required more than he wanted to give. Then when his younger siblings reached college age he watched his parents pay their way which brought feelings of jealousy and added to his lacking 2nd house values. He also didn't usually speak up about his worth to his employers or aggressively look for a job when he needed to the most. The interception, though, brought jobs to him, literally. More than one employer called him or knocked on his door asking to hire him. That's the magnetic attraction at work. Where he wouldn't communicate, the other did. His current employer, (last 20 years) has taken good care of him, giving him generous raises and perks. He has become self taught and is even very good at catching and correcting the architect's mistakes.
I would say you may have been forced to depend on your own resources, energy and abilities to get where you are and have much to be proud of. You may compare yourself to others but the energy would be better spent comparing yourself now to when you were much younger. Then you will see the vast growth. Also realize that others are just as valuable, no more, no less, even if what they contribute doesn't have a price tag attached. Sometimes the most valuable gifts come free. If you were fortunate to have a mother able to care for the home and you, she was just as valuable as your father who bought the food. He couldn't go to that job and take care of you too. If they both worked away from home, realize they aren't superman and did the best they knew how. Even if they failed you in some way, they were empowering you to do it for yourself.
Hope this helps. You can now add in the rulers and their placements to the mix. How have you used the Mercury opp. Saturn? Mer. rules the 8th and Saturn is exalted in Libra.

Hi AE, I really appreciate the info. you posted (I love Barbara Hand Clow...she's got the rebel spirit.... )And I guess with the equator being bulged it can use a diet...LOL...No but really, that was very interesting!! Who in the world would have known all that?? Never the less, the interception topic led me to looking into family members and ex loved one's charts. It's all so very interesting esp. synestrically. I almost feel like crying!! The lessons so profound and in hindsite, touching how much a struggle..... In an ex loved one's chart he has Aries intercepted in 1st - (Asc. 28 Pisces and 2nd house cusp 6 Taurus). My SN is in his first and NN 7th of course (in his intercepted signs..) He has no personal planets of his own in those houses. One personal planet of mine and POF are in his first as well. Very basic but.... Cafe Astrology:
"This is a relationship axis, where Aries and the 1st house represent "self" and Libra and the seventh house represent "other". Where Aries-1st house is about self-assertion, Libra-7th is about compromise. People born with planets in both Aries and Libra or both the 1st and 7th need to learn the balance between these two needs"With my POF in his first I had often wondered if I were "fortunate" for him. And with my NN in his 7th I had often thought this pointed the way toward a future..It was not meant to be...I think I'll always be sad about that.... It was not meant to be in the way I might have thought so as perhaps the lesson for him is that he is learning about compromise and it wasn't as forthcoming as need be to get on together. Perhaps he's to finish that lesson with someone else. I feel I compromised till my face turned blue - my learning and putting into practice the NN and where I'd come from in the past with Aries SN perhaps. Anyway, with synestry then, would you say that a person's personal planets, Nodal Axis, etc., hints of someone being a part of the intercepted person's karma and/or lesson if not their own to some degree. I say "some degree" because there was something in it for me to reslove also... I'll have to give this more thought but it has certainly lent some insight! Thanks so much again...Flower

Yes, flower, I'd say you're right. Follow the dispositorship of their interception for further confirmation. That will show more of the specifics of how or which side the lack is on.

AE, It's interesting about this person's interception and the depositorship and deficiency. Interception Aries-Libra Axis ruled by Mars ( in Leo) , literally opposite their Venus (in Aq).Venus conjunct their SN Capricorn. "I have never yet had a client with an interception who wasn’t mastering their karmic failure and giving the gift indicated by the interception" - As stated by B. Clow Following the depositorship to this person's Mars-Moon in Leo conj. NN Cancer Opp. Venus-SN Cap., perhaps this person is working on doing Leo in a large hearted giving way and that will be their gift. There's much more to it all of course but that seems to be a crux as far as I can figure... I'd say with a personal planet (of mine) conj. their SN, this just confirms more so the interaction Flower
