Inspired by BodaciousBabe: ( I think you're being so courageous and honest, your story is so moving...) What does Soma represent?? I'm not familiar with it at all! The body, I guess...
My love and I have mutual Amor-Lilith contacts... Difficult energies to combine??? Love, Juliet

Dear Juliet, Kim et all,
Thank you for your kind words, Juliet. This week I have been feeling anything but courageous in the face of this relationship. Sometimes it's just too much and I want to hide in a shell. I am trying to let go of it and just move along with it, but the intensity is beginning to take its toll, to tell you the truth.
Kim, I hope you are feeling better soon. So sorry to read of your accident.
I haven't read any interpretations of Soma, but have developed some ideas based on my experiences of the most unusual relationship which got me studying astrology and participating in this forum. (I received Kim's very interesting and worthwhile Eros report this week--many Eros connections between our charts--mind you, this man is NOT my husband and 22 years younger than me.)
Evidentally Soma is the name of a drug but there is another description that comes from the yogic tradition:
"The sahasrara chakra is the spiritual center at the crown of the head where advanced yogis focus during meditation. According to the tradition, soma, (divine nectar) begins to flow in deep states of meditation and produces a state of bliss. Soma is an inner expression of the energy of consciousness itself—intensely blissful and evoked through one-focused attention, not through ingesting external substances.
In India there’s an esoteric form of spiritual practice called Madhu yoga (“the yoga of honey”)in which the yogi connects with the supreme inner sweetness. They say that when kundalini begins to flow there’s a buzzing sound in the inner ear very much like the sound of a swarm of bees. And when this sound arises deep in meditation, it means you’re approaching the thousand-petaled lotus at the crown of the subtle body, which overflows with soma. The inner knowledge and intense rapture experienced here is the brimming energy of Self-awareness."
Even though I practice only a basic yoga and meditation, I have experienced what is described above, and this young man seems to call this out in me. He is also half Indian/half Swedish. So this explanation seems to fit the asteroid Soma and the Soma connections in our charts.
All my writing and poetry expressing this passion have to do with sweetness, the Divine, etc. I must add that I see this relationship as an immense gift because the past two years have been filled with loss, horrific surgery and much inner soul-searching to learn from mistakes and move forward. It's as if he is a giant mirror that is reminding me that all those qualities are still in me somewhere.
Of course, my husband loves me, and the Eros connections between us are intense. But after 27 years of being together, the dark challanges of the past few years, and trying to raise our children, well, you get the picture.
I am interested in any other thoughts on Soma.
Rambling on, BodaciousBabe

I also think you are very courageous and open. It is a wonderful model!
I don’t know much about Soma, but will investigate as time allows. I know it means “body” and perhaps brings the spirit into the body in a sensual way, as described by the yoga mediation. It also makes me think of “alpha waves” that occur in mediation and are “beneath” the level of sleep.
Hopefully I can glean more information on this topic.
Warmly, Kim

Hi! Some more on Soma... Soma is a female name in Hindi, and means Moon. It's derived from Soma the Moon God in Indo-Aryan mythology, where Soma is both a God and the plant (or mushroom according to some scientists) where the intoxicating elixer was made of. Here's a quote:
"So also there is another myth in the Puranas regarding the War in Heaven. When Soma (moon) elopes with Tara, wife of Brihaspati (Jupiter), it causes a War in Heaven—a war between gods and demons. Usanas (Venus) or Shukracharya (leader of the danavas) is on the side of Soma, Brihaspati or Jupiter is the symbol of exoteric or dead-letter form of worship, or ritualistic worship. Soma is the mystery god and presides over the mystic and spiritual nature in man and universe. He is concerned with rebirth of man as a spiritual being. Tara, wife of Brihaspati, is shown as one who is wedded to dogmatic worship, yet longs for true wisdom. Thus, she represents spiritual aspiration. Soma eloping with Tara implies Soma initiating her into the occult mysteries, and their union leads to the birth of Budha, or Mercury, or Hermes in Greek mythology, which represents esoteric Wisdom."

Hi Juliet and all, This is fascinating. I get the feeling that Soma as the elixir or ambrosia of the gods does link to the experience of “alpha waves” as obtained through mediation. Yet there seems something very corporeal about Soma. I suppose I can’t shake the Greek “Somatikos” of or pertaining to the body. Soma seems intrinsically linked to the Moon yet takes on all kinds of forms (is polymorphic)—a bird, a bull, an embryo, a giant of water, a king of plants, a divine power that banishes evil, a prince of poets, the link between heaven and earth. These images bear a close resemblance to Venus’ domain. (the animals are hers, as is poetry) Here are a few links that go into more detail of the Hindu Soma. www.webonautics.com/mythology/soma.htmlrbedrosian.com/soma.htmrbedrosian.com/soma.htmFor those wanting to find asteroid 2815 Soma in their charts, it is not yet on Jon Dunn’s site but you can add it to your chart print out on Astrodeinst - www.astro.com/Warmly, Kim

Juliet and Kim,
Thanks for this information--very helpful and right on the mark. I looked up the asteroids Soma and Tara in our synastry and composite charts and found some more mythic connections. This is both not surprising and very bizarre.
Just for the heck of it, I also looked up the asteroids Isis and Osiris in our synastry charts and just about fell over. I have often felt like he and I were either "putting each other back together" or "finding and assembling missing parts of each other."
The plot thickens.... BodaciousBabe
