Today is my ruling planet (Mercury) return day so I'm looking at the chart with Kim's notes on returns, and hoping to post some further thoughts in the next few days.
First quick observations -
My natal vertex (29 Libra) appears exactly on the IC of the return chart - this seems very significant, not sure how, I'm going to think about it! The return ascendant falls in my natal 4th house, (conjunct progressed Sun by 1 degree.)
Fixed t-square between Sun (return chart ruler) at 22 Taurus, Moon at 25 Leo and Chiron/Neptune/North Node in Aquarius (have a fixed t-square in my natal chart, so this is familiar). Sun is also trine Jupiter and sextile Uranus which seems like a lovely expansive and buzzy energy (Sun is conjunct natal Mars too).
A strong Earth emphasis (natal chart has just Mars and Pluto) and very little water (Uranus in Pisces, compared to my natal which has Sun, Jupiter, Chiron and Neptune in Water). The lack of water feels odd, and Uranus isn't exactly at home in it!
More later - I'm keen to know if anyone else has done ruling planet returns and what you found from them!

hi there Ariesmoon, thanks for posting this - I've been studying my return charts this past few weeks but had not yet looked at my Mercury return (my chart ruler)... Celeste Teal (I always have a bit of a chuckle at her name) wrote that there is a lot of synchronicity between charts and I see this as true - I'm shown 'themes' between charts and this year in particular places heavy emphasis on Mars and my seventh house. My mercury return (which was on May 3, just three days from my Solar Return) has natal vertex on the ASC, with Mars rising and Jupiter on the Descendant (Jupiter is my natal seventh house ruler and Mars resides in my natal seventh house)...the MR moon (return chart ruler) is conjunct Natal Venus (as is my progressed moon) and Venus is conjunct progressed Venus/MC/Saturn. have you looked at your other returns? Can you see connections and themes? How about last years and next years? I have Saturn on the MC opposite moon on the IC in this year's Solar Return (last year's Solar Return had Saturn on the ASC) and next year the chart's AC/DC axis is conjunct this opposition... also useful is to look at the Sabian Symbols for the predominant degrees... Its fascinating isn't it?

It certainly is fascinating! I hadn't thought to look across at other returns so I'll definitely do that. Solar return comes up in late June and Venus sometime in August. That Libra vertex on the IC - I'm certainly re-examining what makes me feel safe, and it is about balance and harmony and gentleness. Progressed Venus moved into Libra last year conjunct draconic Saturn so making foundations based around faithful loving relationships is very much a theme.
Last year's solar return was very Jupiter-oriented with my DC degree (8 Sag) on the AC and Jupiter rising in the 1st. (I set it for Toronto, where I was on holiday, rather than for my birthplace, so it was fascinating just how different it was being somewhere else - I hadn't had the solar return in mind when I booked the holiday!) It's certainly turned out to be a free-ranging, learning and travelling year and I have felt optimistic and very open about exploring new opportunities. I'd been in a career rut - Saturn in the 10th - and this really did mark my breakaway from what had become a millstone round my neck, also a period of much better health and energy. The Sabian symbol for 8 Sag is "within the depths of the Earth, new elements are being formed" and I've definitely been told there has been a "new" me emerging in the last year or so.
Lots more to think about - thank you!

I've just spotted - don't know why it's taken me this long, probably been too busy talking! - that the new Moon on 3 June was at 13.34 Gemini. My ruling planet Mercury is at 13.36 Gemini. So not only have I just had a ruling planet return, I've now had a New Moon directly on it. It's certainly been a frenetic week with lots of new discoveries in astrology, lots of emailing and phoning, long chats with friends, and I've started a business and joined a gym (very first house - a new start on how I present myself, and updating my appearance!) My brain really has been buzzing which isn't surprising.
I love the Sabian symbol for this degree - it's about telepathy, and being in tune with others. "Two People At Widely Different Points Are in Conversation With Each Other By Means of Telepathy". This for me is about bridging distances and feeling connected, even when people you love are miles away, and about trusting your clairvoyant abilities. For a logical Gemini, that's a huge step, and very clearly the challenge I'm being given at this time.
I've been reading from Lynda Hill's writing on Sabian symbols - on this she says - ".. don't allow yourself to submit to others' disapproval. Trust your intuition in the giving and receiving of messages". My Ruling Planet return ascendant in Scorpio is very close to the Eros return AC, and both are conjunct Psyche. Kim's commentary on my Eros return was very much about trusting in my intuition and what my heart is telling me to do, and not worrying about social norms.
I get the wonderful feeling of everything clicking together. I've just had a Lilith report done by Tom Jacobs which brought up some amazing insights, and I'm going to post on that soon.
