Hi all, You can see I want to keep the information in this thread clear and accessible. This thread will be for all posts related to aspects, and I will begin with Amoroso's question about the opposition: The 180 Degree Opposition The opposition indicates a contrast of needs, values and drives. Traditionally it represents separation, conflict and the disparity of divergent needs. The objectivity implied in an opposition is the formation of a cooperative partnership, the uniting in some equitable way of two opposites. The path to that objective, however, often leads through a battlefield of conflict and differentiation. The strife of an opposition is not necessarily active because the planets themselves are in conflict but because the signs usually are. It is a positional dilemma. Unless the planets are in an out of sign opposition, they are in diametrically opposite and full of contrasting drives. In Horary astrology, planets in opposition are “separated” indicating “distance” between their goals and purpose. They do not work naturally to bring opposing forces together and only do so through conflict and contradiction. They may represent two individuals whose desires or purposes are at odds, or two options that stand out more for their contrast than their commonality. The mechanism of projection comes into its own in the opposition aspect. The ambiguous quality of the aspect can easily create a division so strong that the only solution is to get someone else to act out one of the extremes. This is exemplified in relationships where one person wants freedom (Uranus) and the other wants closeness (Venus), or where one partner is a boisterous extrovert (Jupiter) and the other more traditional or conservative (Saturn). One or both parties may have a Venus/Uranus opposition or a close Jupiter/Saturn opposition, or other aspect, and be unable to come to terms with the dichotomy in any way other than “divide and project”. The projection of an opposition is a natural first step towards integrating the divergent needs. Getting our oppositions out in the open in this way validates both needs, even if vicariously. Once we begin to own both perspectives, the sought for co-operation of the opposition can come into play. In Horary, the opposition denotes separating or pulling apart, though a third planet, (often a third party) may be in aspect to both, bringing them together. Always check to see if the opposition is applying (they are moving towards the exact opposite) or separating (moving away). Be sure to check if one or both planets involved are retrograde. You have to think, “what direction is this planet moving?” And consider whom the planet, in the horary question, represents. An a 8 to 10 degree orb is allowed, except for the moon who has no limitations to the orb as long as she is applying. If past the exact, the opposition represents an event in the past. It’s done. Kim

Hi Kim
I wanted to ask a question about which aspects count when looking at the last aspect of the Moon to find the reason for asking the question.
thanks Mar

Hi Mar, In horary, we look at the Moon's preceding conjunction. That's it. The only lunar aspects that 'count' after that are the approaching aspects (all in sign--no out of sign aspects allowed). So, the planet the moon last pasted over no matter how many houses and signs back tell something about the nature of the PRECEDING activity that lead to the question. The moon's preceding conjunction also indicates an event of importance to the question. The event is tied to the house the conjunction took place in, and may be far into the past. The nature of the event is described by the planet. (emphasized by that planet's closest aspect). Mars denotes action or force Venus is about cooperation Mercury is coordination, dialog and talk talk talk The Sun is about ambition, distinction and promotion Jupiter is travel and expansion Saturn is organization, reality check, discipline Uranus is about excitement, reorganization, sudden change Neptune is about the 'veil', mystery, deception, longing Pluto denotes complications and collective energy I am sure we can all add more to these key words! With this in mind, Mar, what do you think the preceding lunar conjunction in your example chart relates to? Kim

Hi Kim you wrote: With this in mind, Mar, what do you think the preceding lunar conjunction in your example chart relates to? Well really I suppose the reason for the question was impatience! Very Martian energy - I should know as an Arien it is a quality I lack. The event in the past relating to the house? Well I think the event that prompted this question was because a very interested buyer was put off by the fact that a road is supposed to be built behind the house. It isn't a big road and has been planned for about eight years - but I suppose this made the sellers wonder if selling the house would be more difficult even though they themselves have never thought this to be off putting. thanks Mar

Dear Kim, I was wondering how you percieve the "Square" aspect within Horary (do you still find it a source of conflict as in "traditional" Horary charts are, or do you feel it is an Awareness as with the opposition (and yet a source of conflict due to seperation).. What are the key words you would use to describe it? In this area of questioning too, could you tell me of your ideas surrounding the "semi sextile" (or the awkwardness of the quincux) in Horary. Does it still mean something is "uneasy" and "maladjusted"? What key words would you use? and finally, are there any books you personally recomend for the newer outlook on Horary astrology? Thank very much for your time, svenskasfinx P.S. If anyone has this kind of information, please pass it along, thank you .

dear svenskasfinx,
i'm sorry in advance for not having time to dig up the couple articles i have on the subject, but i thought i'd add my thoughts here.
squares in horary are not deal killers. as a general rule they could indicate delays. semi-sextiles are favorable (especially with money matters for some reason, according to anthony louis), and as long as there's reception a semi-sextile could definitely have the power to answer a horary positively. quincunxes generally indicate an adjustment.
remember that in horary:
1. Dignity shows the power to act. 2. Reception shows the inclination to act. 3. Aspect shows the occasion to act.
so always check the dignity score, and you will see how much power a planet actually has to complete the deed. then check for reception - that's very important. you can also have the querent & quesited posited in each other's house, that is called emplacement and is a form of reception. then finally check the aspect, of course. if there is no aspect then reception and emplacement can really help the matter along. also, i have found that even aspects not in orb count, especially with the moon. look at ALL the aspects the moon makes before leaving her current sign. also, collection or translation can definitely help matters along and indicate a positive answer. keep in mind too if there's prohibition or frustration, that the matter may not be hopeless, because the actual planet doing the frustrating or prohibiting needs to be a malefic AND powerful. that happened to me in a recent chart, the moon frustrated the 2 significators by perfecting a square with the slower of the 2 sigs, but the moon's dignity score was like a -4, so the matter came to pass anyway.
hope this helps!
sincerely, chrissy

Wow, I missed this question, Sven--that was 2 months ago! Yiks! Juliet and Chrissy have given some great input here. I know that the dignity of a planet is crucial, and you have to consider 'what' the planet rules, or whom. The square is often considered 'trouble making' simple because if involves obstacles, setbacks and conflicts to resolve. I think it makes things interesting. . . Remember, a square doesn't deny success though it may obscure it for a time. It's pressure. If the significators are square but angular, or strong by dignity, direct, not aspected to Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto and sometimes mars, making links to the Sun, Moon, Jupiter or Venus, you often have a pretty satisfactory outcome to the question. If not, the square aspect can indicate quarrels (between those whom the aspected planets represent) blocks, entanglements and intense situations. If the Moon's last aspects is a square, the querrent will encounter some difficulties with the outcome--perhaps getting what they want then not wanting it after all!!! Basically, the square denotes OBSTICLES that have to be dealt with--it can lead to tremendous creativity in the process. The require GREATER EFFORT. You have to work hard for the outcome. The semi-sextile and quincunx (inconjuncts) are considered minor aspects in horary and used mainly for confirmation of what is already shown by the major ones. The inconjuncts tend to put the querent in the position of supporting, or paying for or facilitating in some way the person indicated by the aspected planet. Hope this helps--belatedly!!! Kim

Dear All,
Can't seem to post charts these days, but I have a basic question about the sextile.
If "her" ruler is Jupiter at 14 Scorpio and my ruler is Mercury at 6 Capricorn, does that count as an applying sextile?
In the chart in question, Mercury will be sextile Scorpio before it changes signs.
Thanks! Amoroso

Dear Amoroso,
That would be a 'leaving' sextile.
To have an 'applying' aspect, the faster (of the two planets) should be behind the slower one. Change of sign is immaterial for counting the type and nature of aspect.
with best wishes Kris
PS: How is your husband ? Hope he is stable and is recovering fast. Did you mention it elsewhere ? I don't know. I have come back to the forum today after finishing 15 days official tour.

Amoroso, and Kris, I think you do have an applying sextile in this case! Mercury is behind Jupiter in degrees, AND a lot faster. It will sextile Jupiter around 14/15 degrees of Scorpio.

Let us refresh ourselves with some fundamentals.
Aspect is the angular distance, in degrees, between two heavenly bodies. Basically, an aspects is formed when two planets are at any one of defined angular distances within permissible orb.
Aspects are of two types - applying and leaving. An applying aspect is formed when the two bodies are within permissible orb and are going to make an exact aspect. THUS, APPLYING ASPECT IS POSSIBLE ONLY WHEN FASTER PLANET IS BEHIND THE SLOWER ONE. If faster planet is ahead of slower one, the aspect is known as LEAVING aspect because they are separating from exact aspect.
I take an example with conjunctions. We know, Jupiter is slower than mercury. Say, Jupiter is at14 Sco and Mer is at 10 Sco. Mercury makes an 'applying' conjunction as it is going to make an exact aspect (0 orb) being faster of the two. Conversely, Mer at 18 Sco could still make a conjunction with Jupiuter but a 'leaving' conjunction since it is getting separated from Jupiter.

This is a really interesting question. I do see both points. Yes, there will be a sextile from Mercury to Jupiter, but, according to Kris' explanation, it can not be counted as applying. What I understood, in this case, was that if Mercury was anything PAST the exact sextile--in this case, what Juliet pointed out, that would be considered a non-relevant sextile in horary. Anyone else have any specific examples of this kind of thing? Hummm. Kris, thanks for your inquiry about my husband. I don't know if you saw my horary under "Health Horary." He is going through more tests right now. But he is otherwise healthy, an active athlete and has a good attitude. And welcome back after your tour. Juliet, miss "talking" with you! Blessings, Amoroso

I follow a slightly different approach to aspects than Kris--which doesn't say my way is 'right'...it's just different. I totally respect Kris's insights and contributions as an astrologer. You get this in any field--different approaches. I think the contrast is healthy! You can all decide what path to follow. My orientation is that ANY aspect that is moving towards perfection is applying, though that application can be waxing or waning. In the example of Jupiter and Mercury that Amoroso posted, I see that as a waning sextile that is applying. I would 'count' it. I think in Horary it is significant whether the aspect can be 'completed' before the planets change signs (usually relevant with the moon, who moves so quickly, or a planet in the very last degrees of a sign). Consider the example of the Moon in Horary. We count ALL of her applying aspects, yet she may be at 28 Aquarius and Mercury may be at 29 Gemini. That would be an applying waxing trine. I'd certainly count it. Here is an on-line definition from www.psychicguild.com/aspects/terms.htm (Astro-aspects) that might explain it better! A waxing aspect occurs when an aspect formed as the faster planet moves towards being opposition from the slower planet, and a waning aspect occurs when the faster planet is returning back to conjunction to the slower planet. Examples: If the Sun is at 10 degrees of Gemini and the Moon is at 9 degrees of Leo, this is an applying, waxing aspect with a 1 degree orb because the faster planet (the Moon) is heading towards the exact sextile aspect (applying), and it is moving from conjunction towards opposition (waxing). If the Moon is at 11 degrees of Leo, it is separating and waxing also with a 1 degree orb. if the Moon is at 9 degrees of Aries, it is applying and waning with a 1 degree orb, and if the Moon is at 11 degrees of Aries, then it is separating and waning also with a 1 degree orb. Make sense? Kim
