Hi Kim and All, I was reading the Bacchus thread in the "Asteroids" section. So I thought it might be fun to look at synastry connections with Bacchus. I pulled up my chart with someone of interest and found an interesting Bacchus connection. His Bacchus exactly conjunct my Chiron/name asteroid in Pisces in my 1st house, his 4th house, and My Bacchus in Leo (7th house) exactly opposed his Chiron in Aquarius (4th house). I am guessing it has something to do with creativity and healing/teaching, although, who knows, in Pisces, I'm thinking it could be musical or maybe escapism, merging, addiction. Healing an addiction? Or Chiron being healed through creativity, wild abandon? Hmmm. I'm stumped. It trines Neptune and opposes Pluto. I'd love some input on this one! Also if anyone has any interesting Bacchus contacts, how do they manifest in your relationships?? Thanks!! A.R.

Dear A.R.,
I just started a thread on Dionysus. My Edith Hamilton "Mythology" treats Bacchus and Dionysus as one in the same, but I think they probably represent related but slightly different energies. Maybe someone has more info on the mythology of both. I will ponder this.
Sometimes it is difficult for me to look at the synastry with C. because I know enough now to see that the symbols show an excruciatingly beautiful relationship which is terribly difficult to express on this plane at this point tin time. I looked at the Bacchus contacts and it just underscored what I have been babbling about since October. His Bacchus is conjunct by one degree to my Chiron/Eros, which makes my Chiron/Eros the midpoint between his Bacchus and Vesta. (all in his eighth house and in Aquarius.) His Vesta and Ceres are also conjunct my Chiron/Eros.
My Bacchus is the midpoint to his Juno and Pars Fortunae, conjunct to both in 9th house Aquarius. This doesn't even include any of the aspects.
I think these contacts make being together almost like taking a drug. Sometimes it's not enough and we're left with wanting more and more, sometimes we overdose, get physically ill, and can't fathom seeing each other again!
My husband's Bacchus is conjunct my NN and his own Eros. He adores beer and wine! I think it interesting that his Bacchus/Eros is loosely conjunct his own Mars/Saturn conjunction, all in 6th house Sag, which points to his athleticism. The beer has never gone to his gut! He seems to get high when he observes me doing what's right for me.
My Bacchus is conjunct his Moon, which is conjunct my maiden name in his natal. That one is pretty self explanatory!
In synastry with my 12 year old daughter, my Bacchus opposes her Chiron and her Bacchus trines my Chiron/Eros!!! Both Chiron's are in our own 4th houses. Now THERE'S an interesting combination. I think this energy can best be described by something that happened this morning. I was in the basement, doing laundry and dancing to some Bonnie Raitt tunes. She came down and began to dance with me, and we danced while doing laundry. It created a pretty cool energy!
In synastry with my 16 year old son, I don't have a good grasp on the symbolism. His Bacchus/Pluto in 6th house Scorpio (both my kids have Pluto in Scorpio!!!!) squares my Chiron/Eros. My Bacchus semi-squares his Mars which is also conjunct my Ceres. I think I don't have a good grasp on this because the image looks pretty intense.
Hope this gives you some ideas on this asteroid in your synastries!
Thanks for the thread, Amoroso

Well, I should have reread the thread on Bacchus and Kim's explanation of Bacchus vs. Dionysus before I posted. But in case anyone is wondering, go to the "Asteroids" section and scroll down to Bacchus, and there you have it.

I went back to the asteroid thread and grabed this post I made there--so we don't have to hop around too much: The Romans loved Bacchus! He was considered an ultimate deity, the recipient of highest reverence. The Bacchanalia, his festive celebration, consisted of decadent eating, drinking, sex and total abandon. He knew how to cut loose. After all, he was the son of Zeus and raised by the Nysaean nymphs. Bacchus, although the Roman name for the Greek Dionysus, is somewhat less “spiritual” in nature than his predecessor. Dionysus was like a dark Christ figure, driven mad by Hera and offering redemption through ecstasy. Bacchus is not dismembered and resurrected as Dionysus, though he is mad as well. Bacchus is more about pleasure through excess than redemption through excess…if that makes sense. Dionysus showed mortals how to express their passions through mania (passionate outpouring as opposed to clinical madness). Bacchus showed mortals how to cultivate fruit trees and grapes and turn them into wine. He is a god of vegetation, the vineyard and the wine itself. How is he different from Pan? Pan, for one, is much older. He is the great ALL. He is wild in nature and does not cultivate anything save perhaps an extremely healthy libido. He shows mortals the realm of the senses, taste, touch, smell, sound by exploration in the body—with the body. He is extremely physical. Bacchus (and Dionysus) are more about escape from the body and the logic of routine into the realm of ecstasy, passion though vision and distortion (drugs and alcohol). I wonder where Timothy Leary’s Bacchus & Dionysus was…
What about creativity? My friend Zane Stein says this: “There is another side to Bacchus, though. I have also found it prominent in the charts of a number of truly artistic individuals who get totally immersed in their work. These people seem to become one with the creative process, losing themselves and the world while they are painting, composing or whatever.”
www.geocities.com/SoHo/7969/bacchus.htmDoes this make sense? Kim I'll be back with some comments on the synastry energy of Bacchus soon! Kim
