As I’ve mentioned before,
Joanne Wickenburg has written extensively on the intercepted signs in the chart and on planets contained in those signs. It’s brilliant. If you want to explore this topic further, I recommend it as a powerful starting point:
www.joannewickenburg.com/books_by_joanne_wickenburg.htm Meanwhile, here are some basics to clarify
terminology and lay some groundwork. All your contributions here are really interesting! Thank you!
Intercepted Signs A sign that is completely contained within a house and does not appear on either cusp.
Intercepted Planet A planet that is intercepted within a house (it is in a sign that does not appear on either house cups.
Duplicated Signs A sign that appears on two consecutive house cusps. (This is where a both house cusps fall within the same sign.)
The
house system you use can alter both intercepted Signs/planets and Duplicated signs.
The
equal house system will never have interceptions or duplications.
The further you are from the
equator, the more you will encounter interceptions and duplications.
Intercepted signs and duplicated signs
always occur in pairs of opposites. This is an axis—what happens to one sign will always correspond identically to its opposite. happen in pairs.
Joanne Wickenburg describes the intercepted sign as a
"room within a room,". You enter the house (the activity or energy of this are of life) in a certain way only to discover there is a whole other experience there.
For example, if you have Aquarius on the 7th house cusp and Venus in Pisces intercepted there (with Taurus on the 8th house cusp), you may have an eccentric, unconventional and somewhat spacious approach to partnership…until you really get into one. Then it is like discovering a whole new world where those intellectually defined Aquarian boundaries melt into a sea of divine longing. Where did that come from? (that’s how it feels…like a foreign country…until you understand it). You will also have Leo Rising with Virgo intercepted in the first house.
In this hypothetical chart above, you will have
duplicated signs. Perhaps Gemini will be on the 9th and 10th house cups, with the opposite sign of Sagittarius on the 3rd and 4th.
In the earlier example above
(Pisces on the 2nd house cusp, Aries Intercepted, Taurus on the 3rd house cusp)—Consider the needs of the ruling and intercepted signs:
When
Pisces is found on the cusp of the second house, the need to dissolve boundaries and have faith in the unknown future falls into the domain of material possessions, money, values, talents and resources. Sometimes this manifests as confusion and mishandling were financial matters are concerned yet it can also indicate a genuine ability to share resources with those in need and an innate metaphysical acuity. The emotions can be strong around ‘belongings and values’ with numinous qualities projected onto tangible objects.
Pisces needs to experience the feelings of acceptance and faith and here in the second that can extend to resources for survival. When this sign believes in the abundance of the universe, they have no doubts or fears around gaining life’s subsistence. If they have a vision based on their true values, the power to manifest comes to the fore. Even when the future is uncertain and the way cloudy or bleak, faith can be the native’s greatest resource, allowing them a peace of mind otherwise unobtainable. Their main approach might be ‘allowing’, ‘letting go’ and ‘floating downstream’.
By contrast, those with
Aries in the second house need to feel in total control of their personal resources and values. They feel best when making their own money, developing their own assets and defining what is valuable to them independent of any social, family or religious bias. Financial success is tied up with feelings of self-worth, and those with this placement need to pioneer imaginative ways of supporting themselves in a tangible sense.
Aries here wants to meet obligations immediately and can be uncomfortable borrowing money. They never want to appear weak, ineffective or out of pocket. When given a credit card, however, the fiery spirit of Aries may pull all the stops. There is nothing wrong with this placement’s ability to spend. They can shop like a trooper, being consumers par excellent when enthusiasm strikes!
Aries contained in the second house by interception may not express authentic needs right away. The approach to resources may have an altruistic motive, sharing income, values and possessions without distinction or boundaries. The need for independent control may be fogged, requiring new experiences to develop the Aries qualities in regards to values. Conversely, those with this interception may enter into financial agreements with a Pisces sense of merger only to awaken the Aries side that wants to be in control and stand on its own.
I find that
going to the RULING planet of the intercepted sign can show us healthy and creative ways to open up this ‘hidden room’ in your intercepted signs. In the above example, Aries wants to be independent in the area of the chart where he is found and ignoring this basic need can literally make us sick. Understanding and developing the needs of the natal
Mars by house, sign and aspect can aid in the healthy expression of a second house Aries.
