Hi Kim and all:
Well, I have a kind of beginner question. What is the importance of midpoints? Are they considered an actual blending of the two planets involved, and why are those points important.
Also, I am looking to learn much more about astrology. I know a little bit about a lot, but not enough to really interpret charts or transits, etc. with any confidence. Can anyone recommend good books, tapes, etc? (I will be ordering Kim's book on Eros)
Sorry for the 2 questions. I got carried away
Much thanks.
A.R.

Hello AquariusRising,
Midpoints are located in the zodiac half-way between two other points. They can be “direct” midpoints or “indirect.
A direct midpoint means you have a planet or point exactly conjunct or opposite the midpoint. Example: Sun 10 Aries and Moon 10 Libra creates a midpoint at 10 Cancer. A planet there or at 10 Capricorn is on the direct midpoint.
An indirect midpoint is a planet in square, semi-square or sesquiquadrate to the midpoint (in this case a planet at 25 Leo/Aquarius or 25 Taurus Scorpio).
I use the direct midpoints, near and far (conjunct or opposite) almost exclusively.
The midpoints do combine energy between the two planets or points it sits between (you can uses planets, angles, vertex, AP, asteroids etc. If a planet falls on a midpoint between two others, the midpoint will alter and effect how that planet expresses. The information gained by looking at midpoints can add much more to interpretations though the orb must be VERY tight!
Example: in your chart, your North Node is 23 Aquarius. It sits right on your Me/Ma (Mercury-Mars) Midpoint. Me/Ma is about energetic, enthusiastic expression of the written or spoken word. It’s about the healthy assertion (Mars) of what you are thinking (Mercury). It is ideas (Mercury) in action (Mars).
With the North Node there (what we need to acquire) it suggests that by being more mentally assertive and finding directs and clear ways to express your thoughts will help you become more of who you are. Do you see how the blending works?
As far as books to read for your astrological education, I would recommend anything by Dennis Elwell, Howard Sasportis, Richard Idemon, Joanne Wickenburg, Liz Greene, Stephen Arroyo and…me ;D (My Astrology & Aptitude manual is full of basic information on the signs, planets, houses etc…
There are others, of course, but these are my favorite educators in this field, off the top of my head.
Thanks for your question on Midpoints. I don’t have any written material on Eros midpoints for my reports yet, but I want to get to writing that too. Time!
Warmly, Kim

Thanks for your reply Kim:
Your explanation of midpoints is very helpful. Is there anything on the Astrodienst website, that you know of, that will show midpoints and how they fall in the actual birthchart?
Also, thanks for the reccomendations regarding increasing my astrological knowledge. How do I order your book? Is it on your website?

I can’t see where Astrodeinst offers midpoints. Perhaps if you email them, they would consider including the calculations. Midpoints take a while to do by hand, but you really get to know your chart by taking that time. Here is what you do:
To find the midpoint between, say, Eros at 22 Aries and Psyche at 14 Taurus, we reduce the degrees to their “circumference numbers” (see the list below) Respectively, 22 Aires stays the same at 22 because it is 22 degrees from 0 Aries. 14 Taurus, however, become 44 because we add 30 degrees to get to Taurus plus the 14 degrees into (Taurus starts 30 degrees from Aries and hence 14 Taurus is 44 degrees from Aries-Yes?) Now, added them together and divided by 2. 22 plus 44 is 66, divided by 2 is 33. 33 (from the list below) is 3 Taurus (just count 33 degree from Aries). This gives a farther midpoint Eros of 3 degrees of Scorpio (or 213). The following list reinterprets the signs into degrees of the circle.
Aries 0 Taurus 30 Gemini 60 Cancer 90 Leo 120 Virgo 150 Libra 180 Scorpio 210 Sagittarius 240 Capricorn 270 Aquarius 300 Pisces 330
Although the nearer midpoint is the one generally plotted in the chart, if the two original planets are close to 180 degrees apart, both resulting midpoints may be of equal significance.
Let’s do another so it’s even more clear. If someone had Venus at 25 Gemini, that would work out to be 85. If you had Uranus at 18 Leo, it would be 138. Add them together to get 223, then divide by 2 = 111.5. That turns back into 21.5 Cancer. (right on your Mercury!!! Now we can see that a somewhat shy Mercury in Cancer can express quite a surprising, witty and eccentric flare in social situations or when least expected! See how this works?
You can order my Astrology and Aptitude manual from amazon.com or direct from the AFA. My other books are not yet released…((*&%^$#@#!#...Saturn give me patience!
I hope this helps. I have emailed you a table of your natal midpoints. Just let me know if you can read the fonts on your computer, and if you want any others. Midpoints in synastry is fascinating!!!
Does anyone know where you can get computer generated midpoints on-line (free?)

Hi Kim:
Thanks so much for the reply. I can see where calculating midpoints by hand would certainly familiarize one with a chart! Thanks so much for the calculation formula. Okay, now I get how the midpoints in relation to a planet falling there works. However, let's say my Sun/Moon midpoint is 23 degrees of Taurus and no planet falls there. Are the energies of my Sun and Moon blended to take on sort of a Taurean feel or is it just the degree of the midpoint that is important in relationship to another planet?
Now I'm all excited to start looking at midpoints in Synastry too! I am assuming it works the same way in relationship to A's plantet falling on B's midpoint. Same in transits too??
You've mentioned Joanne Wickenburg often in the threads. From your recommendations, I am going start by looking into her works as well as ordering your Apptitude Manual. Looking forward to reading it.
Thanks again Kim for taking the time!!

Can you believe I have been locked out of my own forum? I had to delete my temp. internet files and then couldn’t log back on…I have email support…Meanwhile, is looks like I am a guest!!! Meanwhile, The Sun/Moon Midpoint at 23 Taurus does have and Earthy feel, with a dash of Mercury (from the Virgo ruled decan) and a deeper tone of Uranus (from the Aquarius ruled Dwad). I think the blending of your Solar purpose (Gemini) and your Lunar inner world (Aries) does take on a surprisingly earthy tone, sensual, steadfast, articulate and full of purpose. Yes, you would note transits to this point. AND PROGRESSIONS! You would also note another’s personal planet (in particular) in direct contact here (23 Taurus) or opposition (23 Scorpio). I think composite Juno at 21 Scorpio is interesting, as is his natal Jupiter at 26 Scorpio. These would activate the Sun/Moon which is archetypal in a sense: it is man/Woman, day/night, Conscious/Unconscious, love, friendship, marriage, union of opposites, the list goes on forever. I think Juno there activates a feeling of commitment to union, and Jupiter brings a feeling of success in joint ventures. I am sure you are getting the idea of how this works. And yes, Joanne Wickenburg is a wonderful teacher and speaker. You can order her books and tapes from here: www.joannewickenburg.com/index.htmAlso, my Aptitude manual is 15% off from amazon.com right now…only $11.00 or something like that. Warmly, Kim

Kim: I got such a giggle out of you being locked out of your own forum. I know that must have been extremely frustrating at the time, but it is just "soooo" something that would happen to me. I can relate. Anyway, I'm glad you got on, even as a guest ;D I ordered your book, and also Joanne Wickenburg's book regarding the natal chart. I am really looking forward to reading both. Thanks to your examples, the light bulb is starting to come on regarding how to put planets, midpoints, transits etc. together. Of course I got so excited about the midpoints and your "particular person" example, I was up until 1:30 last night looking for more connections. (Being the novice I am, I wouldn't have looked at those Juno connections) And I found more, like my progressed Eros on his natal Vertex, his progressed Venus conjunct the Moon/IC/So.Node in composite and more. I find it fascinating how so many of the connections in the synastry, composite, natal, etc. charts are really beneath the surface, subtle. At least not something that may be blatently obvious. You have to put in the effort, dig a bit to find the gold. Very much like relationships themselves, with others or ourselves. It is good to be aware Okay, I'm getting way to philisophical (and believe me, I can go on being philisophical, ad nauseum! ;D) Anyway, thanks so much, again A.R.

Hi A.R., YES, relationships are really awesome and that very quality is reflected in the charts! It is just amazing…
I have read that book of Joanne Whikenburg’s on the natal chart and it is just an invaluable resource. I am glad you will have that, and mine too! And it delights me to see your enthusiasm and study. I am considering developing an on-line “class room” to run topics of interest. If enough people were interested, I could keep the fee very small and much information, examples and experience could be gained…it’s just a thought…
YES! ;D Hysterical that I couldn’t get on the forum. Lol…I am laughing now though it was anything but yesterday at this time. Proboards are fabulous. They solved my problem immediately (as administrator, I had a different “user” name…which I had completely forgot about) Anyway, let me know what you think of my Astrology and Aptitude. Suggestions always help me make the next work (hopefully) better. Warmly, Kim

Just wanted to let you know that I think the idea of your offering classes on topics of interest is a great idea. Sign me up! ;D
I am looking forward to reading your book (as well as Joanne Wickenburg's book.) I will definitely let you know what I think of your book. I'm already learning alot! (Seems like I have a veracious appetite for astrology these days)
Anyhow, thanks again.

Hi there. I am trying to learn this mentioned midpoint method. I have read about yods and I am now trying to se if I can see any yods between me and a perticular person (this man that I have this very interesting composite chart with). "A Yod is formed when two planets make a sextile aspect and a third planet is opposite their mid-point. That third planet must make angles of 150 degrees with the other two. If you drew lines on the chart connecting the planets, you would get a Y-shaped formation that seems to point to one part of the horoscope. That 150 degree angle is called a quincunx, a strange minor aspect that, by itself, is off again, on again, favorable, unfavorable. The two planets making the quincunx seem to be out of joint." "Remember, anyone who has a planet Opposite the midpoint of your sextile will create a Yod in your chart. It works the same way if one of your planets is opposite the midpoint of one of their sextiles. And don’t forget to look for a lone quincunx in either horoscope. There are two possible places, in that case, where a planet in someone else’s chart could still form a Yod for you. And then it’s off to the races. A relationship to remember. Even if you want to forget. " both at www.bobmarksastrologer.com/TheYod15.5.htmSo I have a sextile between nep 249 and sun 314. So 314 + 249 = 563. Than 563/2 = 281.5 which is the midpoint between the sextile. Than the opposition > 281.5 - 180 = 101.5 > 11.5 can. So this man makes a yod opposite my sun and nep sextile ! And my nep&plu sextile make a yod at 8,0 tau, quite near his mar at 21 tau! And I make several nearly yods with his nep&plu sextile >12.5 tau (near my mars at 17 tau), his sat&plu sextile >13.0 pis and plu&midheaven sextile at 12,0 pis (near my mer at 01 pis), and his jup&sat sextile >18.0 cap (near my ven at 28 cap). Do they count? Or are they too far away? I have looked for quincunx in my and his horoscopes. And mine is: ven 298 inconj/quincunx sat 88 in a quincunx there is 150 degrees between the planets, but between my ven and sat there is 210 degrees (298 - 88 = 210). Hmm... what have I done wrong here??
When I understand how you get a quincunx between my ven and sat, shouldn´t the next step be to see if he has any planets 150 degrees from my ven or sat, when searching for yods? Thanks a bunch,

Hi Sielou, You have the maths down pat. That’s great. If you are looking for synastry chart “yods”, taking the sextile of one person and looking for a planet at the far midpoint in the other person’s chart, you want to keep the orb pretty small—just a few degrees. We are really looking at a midpoint activation for the Yod and that means within a degree or so. I do allow up to 5 degrees for an inconjunct (150 degree) but the YOD is really different because when it is spot on, it triggers the energy of the sextile into a fine point of focus. The inconjunct does something else, with either planet in the sextile. Do you see the difference? The yod is conjunct the “far midpoint” of the sextile aspect creating a focal point there. The inconjunct links the two planets involved, activating both. I find aspects and aspect patterns by looking at the wheel. The only ones I double check manually—to be sure I haven’t missed them—are quintiles and sesquiquadrates and semi-squares (because the degrees are going to be harder to spot.) It’s just practice. You look at the chart, one planet at a time, and watch all the patterns and aspect come up. I am not sure I understand the Venus/Saturn question. If your Venus is 28 Capricorn and your Saturn is 28 Gemini, they are inconjunct. Perhaps you are adding up “the other way around”. The circle has 360 degrees. Your Sat/Venus are 150 apart in the near aspect and of course the remaining 210 degrees the “other way” to complete the circle. Do you see what I mean? It is just like two planets in sextile from Aries to Gemini is 60 degrees and then, if you look at the rest of the chart, it takes another 300 degrees to get from Gemini back to Aries, the long way around. I suggest everyone look for the patterns visually first. See it all visually, as a symbol system. The numbers are there for double checking, but I feel the really “meaning” is gleaned when we can “see” the patterns. Thanks for your input and the link! I am going to go there now. Warmly, Kim

Hi Kim et all,
I just realized that the midpoint between my natal Psyche and Eros is "Chico's" natal Chiron.
My question is, how is this different than the energies represented by my own Chiron/Eros conjunction in aspect to both his Chrion and Eros?
Do I have this right? It seems significant, if it is.
Thanks, Amoroso
